Telemedicine program brings India, Ethiopia closer
A $2.1 million telemedicine program launched by the Indian government in 2007
to link hospitals in Ethiopia with India's leading cardiac institute appears to be
paying off. Patients in the African nation are receiving better care than the
physician-strapped country can normally provide, and India has a definite
relationship-tightening highlight to focus on during the first-ever summit of
African heads of state in New Delhi on April 8-9. "We want Africans to share
expertise with each other and for areas with few doctors to be linked to hospitals
in cities so doctors there can fill the gap," said Ratan Singh, the telemedicine
project's director. Ethiopia is sub-Saharan Africa's second-most populous country
and has one doctor for every 37,000 people.
